FAQ

What is CBD oil?

CBD oil is a 'tincture' based on the extraction of CBD compounds from the hemp plant. A 'tincture' describes a combination of small amounts of CBD dissolved in a liquid which 'carries' the CBD compounds. That means we can create a product which can be easily and regularly consumed to help with sleep disorders and anxiety. There are loads of different ways to take CBD available on the market, but amongst them all, CBD oil offers the most effective way to get great results. It has the perfect concentration of CBD, and, thanks to the fact you take it orally, reaches the right 'receptors' in your body to take effect. This method of consumption is called 'sublingual' - which basically means popping it under your tongue, and allows for the perfect slow and steady spread of CBD throughout your body.

How is CBD oil made?

Manufacturing CBD oil is through a collaboration between growers and producers. First, the CBD is extracted from the hemp plant. The extract is then mixed with another concentrated oil extract to create a pleasant and nutritional mixture. Et voila, the tincture, CBD oil is made. This CBD oil is then mostly used to cope with anxiety and sleep disorder issues.

The manufacturing process of CBD oil goes through a number of different stages, starting with growing and cultivating the hemp plant. Then comes the extraction, which is done using a solvent, and there's lots of different methods of doing this. Finally, the resulting solution is refined to obtain the end product. And your CBD oil is ready to go.

CBD oil extraction processes

There's a few different methods used to get the CBD extract from the hemp plant. Producers can use various techniques such as CO2 extraction, cold press extraction and extraction using a liquid solvent.

CO2 extraction

CO2 extraction is the most common technique used to extract CBD. The same technique is used for perfumes and essential oils extraction, and this method works in what's called 'closed-loop'. The first step consists of placing the hemp plant in a chamber that is filled with carbon dioxide. By pressing it, we squeeze out a liquid containing CBD along with carbon dioxide. Finally, there is a distillation process to separate the CBD from the carbon dioxide, and we can collect the CBD oil extracted. The carbon dioxide is then reused for other extractions.

Extraction with a liquid solvent

Liquid solvent extraction uses flammable products, which make it a quite dangerous extraction method, but also the cheapest. Very often, butane, ethanol and hexane are the solvents used for the extraction.

Cold press CBD extraction

For this extraction process, the hemp plant is frozen before being ground with pressure. This is a way to extract all the terpenes and cannabinoids from the plant. This cold pressing method does not require any special equipment contrary to the other methods.

What does “spectrum” mean in CBD oil?

The 'spectrum' of an oil describes the varying constitution of the CBD in question. It describes the presence of substances other than the CBD itself, found in the original plant. It can describe the presence of THC, but also other cannabinoids, flavonoids and terpenes. The producers can then distill or filter the product to remove some substances they do not need or want in their final product. In that way, the CBD oils you find on the market vary in spectrum.

Full spectrum CBD oil

Full spectrum CBD is the most natural extract from the plant, as it is not modified at all. It means that no substance has been removed during the manufacturing process. As this generated product is pure, it therefore contains a small amount of THC (below 0.2% THC), which naturally occurs in the hemp plant. This is called full spectrum CBD oil. It is generally used as a treatment for anxiety and depression issues.

Broad spectrum CBD oil

Broad spectrum CBD corresponds to full spectrum CBD as it has the same composition, except THC is removed by filtering the original extract. It provides the same benefits as the full spectrum one but without the psychoactive effect that is caused by the THC.

Isolate CBD (narrow spectrum)

In isolate CBD, no other compounds than CBD itself are found in the CBD oil, it is pure CBD, and maximises the concentration of the CBD. This tincture can easily be mixed with other oils that add flavour to create a tasty product, which is also more enjoyable to consume.

Various methods of consumption

There are various means of using CBD oils. They are mostly used for sleep disorders, migraines, nausea, asthma, anxiety, depression and chronic pain. According to its composition and producer’s instructions, CBD oil can be consumed:

using a pipette or dropper, for sublingual application: allowing fast absorption thanks to the captors and receptors that we have under the tongue, the effects come faster and more efficiently.

applying it on the skin and massaging: this technique is mostly used for local pain.

in capsules: you directly swallow the capsule containing oil for oral consumption.

within drinks or food (snacks, cookies, muffins): this is a good way to make oil consumption more digestible and good to the taste.

spraying it under the tongue: It works almost the same way as the sublingual application with the pipette, but with a different applicator.

FAQ

Is CBD oil legal?

CBD is legal in the UK as long as it contains less than 0.2% THC. That is also the case for CBD products and food supplements like the CBD oil. But our CBD oil is entirely THC free, which means that its consumption is perfectly legal.

Can I consume several oils?

As long as you respect the total limit of 70mg of CBD a day, feel free to mix flavours. It might be easier for you to use only one bottle at a time however, to keep an eye on how much you're taking. The specially designed pipette helps you make sure you're getting your dosage right.

What are the side effects of CBD oil?

Although CBD oil is perfectly safe, possible side effects you might spot if you consume substantial amount of CBD include:

Reduced appetite / Diarrhea / Nausea / Low blood pressure / Irritability / Fatigue

These side effects have been noted on individuals  who have taken a huge amount of CBD, well beyond the safety limit of 70mg CBD per day.

Is there THC in CBD oils?

All of our Well Slept oils are THC free. However it is not always the case. Some oils contain up to the legal amount of 0.2% THC, and these are often called 'full spectrum' oils. But THC doesn't offer useful benefits for sleep so there is no real need for it in our products.

What is the difference between broad spectrum and narrow spectrum oils?

Contrary to broad spectrum oils, narrow spectrum oils contain no other compounds than the CBD. This is why narrow spectrum CBD is also called CBD isolate.

I tried once, but it didn’t work. Why should I try again?

It may have been a matter of dosage. Every individual has different sensitivities to CBD, and you will need to adjust your dosage to the correct level, over time. This is why we advise you to start with one specific dose to see how you get on. Then if you feel no difference, you can slowly try to increase your dose per day. Finding the right level will take time - we usually recommend at least 4 weeks to adjust your dosage.
